Hi there,

The molweni dog project is run by an older lady , Elaine Cairns on a voluntary basis. She goes into Molweni with a local chap (for interpretation purposes and safety) mon to fri, she works non stop 8am to 5pm , She also gets calls at all hours to come and assist dogs that have been run over etc. she then calls SPCA emergency no and asks an inspector to go out. She follows up to ensure the animals are definitely seen to.

She takes food for the animals when she has food - she rations it out among the community and educates them about feeding their animals, giving them water and looking after them. She dips dogs with ticks and gives residents stuff for the flies that eat their dogs ears.

She has assisted many, many animals by taking them to Kloof SPCA for medical treatement and sterilization. She deworms the dogs and bathes those that have mange with a specail shampoo which is very expensive but SPCA give her this to use. The one time she went into the township and found a very heavily pregnant dog that had no hair bar a small strip covering its spinal area.

She asked to remove this dog and the owners refused. She then took an SPCA inspector there to talk to the people - it took 2 hours to persuade them to hand over the dog which they eventually did and then to her astonishment the man said wait here and then he came back with another beautiful greyhound type dog that had a huge gash in it from a panga wound. he asked Elaine to attend to the wound and to sterilize the dog which she did ( with SPCA helping here) . recently she got a call about :' a dog stuck in a pipe -plse help" - when she arrived the dog was actually a puppy and the "pipe" turned out to be a long drop toilet. someone had thrown the pup down the long drop. She once again had to call an SPCA inspector as she does not have equipment to get pups out of a situation like this. The dog was finally hauled up covered in you know what. Elaine took it to a tap and washed it off (the tap handle came off too ) , she dried it and took to SPCA.

These are the kind of things she is faced with on a daily basis. Sometimes even the cats are fed mealie meal as that is all the owners have for them. She trys to educate them - gave the owners of the pups (loo story) a real talking to and removed all the other pups and took the parent dogs for sterilization. She is sometimes faced with hostility and agression but this dear soul continues with her good work.

Once she has her camera i am going to try do a quarterly newsletter with pics. so if anyone wants to join the mailing list please send me your email addresses. There is much work that goes on behind the scene too and I have just recently enlisted some help for her here. I will provide further info via the newsletters.

Many thanks for the help

kind regards
